GIANTS is a scripted drama digital series starring Bland, along with child star Vanessa Baden Kelly (“Kenan & Kel,” “Rosewood”) and newcomer Sean Samuels. The show follows three Black millennials nearing the end of their 20s. As they approach age 30, each battle their own inner giants as tougher obstacles of adulthood await. The stakes have never been higher. GIANTS takes things a step further than the typical coming of age story by pushing new boundaries of very real issues including mental health, sexual identity, religious skepticism and grave methods of economic survival.

‘GIANTS’ Producer’s Issa Rae & Jussie Smollet

Insecure’s Issa Rae and Empire’s Jussie Smollett have teamed up to produce Giants, written and directed by James Bland. It is a six-episode series.

Via Essence:

“Giants takes a deep dive into mental health and sexuality, issues that are still somewhat stigmatized in the black community. The show also explores race, class, police brutality, and much more in a very honest and real way. The show finds a way to delicately balance humor with more intense moments, which is what makes it so relatable and heartfelt. Viewers will see themselves in the characters and laugh along with them as they find moments of light in dark situations.”

“What applies to all of these characters is that they decided not to live life the way they’ve been told, and to find their own path to happiness,” Bland told Colorlines.com.

The new original series, premiered January 25 at 8pm. on Rae’s YouTube channel.
